Their previous buildings include Sears Tower in Chicago and the Lever House building in Manhattan - the most elegant, perfect skyscraper everconstructed. Baltimore is an iconic, ingenious residential masterpiece - a harmonious blend of different textures and styles, from classic brick to futurist quartz. SOM‘s design juxtaposes the low rise linear components with a stunning cylindrical high-rise tower, that twists around its own axis; a shifting, hypnotic, rhythmical crystal, light and steel hourglass structure. Floor to ceiling glassfronted apartments are structured around the Avenue, an expansive modern interpretation of the European boulevard: a serene inner space balanced by angular landscaping, with a line of sculptural black monoliths turned into liquid mirrors by a surface of constantly cascading water. Baltimore’s central boulevard, overlooked by private glass-walled balconies, stems from a seven-storey portal by the docks, a dramatic, geometric aperture with a constellation of stars from the northern skies glowing within its roof.
